Sometimes when a tooth is lost, indentation of the gum and jaw bone may occur. This happens because the jawbone recedes and there is no tooth in the original location, causing an indentation. Not only is this indentation unnatural looking, it also causes the replacement tooth to look too long compared to the adjacent teeth. In these cases a bone graft is performed to increase the ridge height and/or width for making dental implant placement possible.
